Learning a new language ? Why not
“Speak a new language so that the world will be a new world.” - Rumi
Hi, welcome back. I am coming back with a topic about learning a new language. Why do I share these thoughts with you all ? Truthfully I do really want to share these hahahhaha
Okay, first thing let me tell you something. English is not actually my main language nor my mother tongue. But as time goes by, when I get older, I start to love English. I Began with my elementary school time, when I realized that I had developed feelings for it. And I started to read a lot of books and learn a lot of vocabulary through it until my middle school time. My English got better when I entered high school. Although it may be far away from good, it really got better that time. Aside from reading books, I learnt it by watching a Korean Drama with English subtitles. I will take a note and look for its meaning as I got confused by the words. By doing that I learnt a new vocabulary everyday. And I keep doing it and do a lot of practice. Until in the University, I took English as a major. So I need to develop and practice more and use it as it is my main language.
So, lets begin to severals way to learn a new languages in a fun way ;
Decided what language you want to learn
At this point, there are really important things you need to consider when you want to learn a new language. You need to decide the language itself. There must be a reason you want to learn it at the first time. Just like me, I decided to learn French because I really want to know the original recipes for French’s sweetness. It motivates me to learn and hope I can master it one day.
Learn a language for a tools or media you love
Just like what I shared above about how I learnt English, make it fun to learn a new language. You can learn from tools or media you love. You can watch a movie and listen to music for your target language, read something in its language, watch a Cartoon, write a journal, through an application like DuoLingo, Tandem, OMETV etc, video games or having friends all over the world.
Keep practicing and be confidence
Learning a new language is not easy, but as long as you have time to always practice and use it confidently, trust me you will not realize how far you have come by using it in daily life. Do not be afraid of making mistakes, because we are still learning. For those mistakes we made, we can learn to be better. And always spare your time to learn it everyday. You must be consistent to learn it. It's really hard for me to do that also hahahhaha.
Do not target when you can master it
Yes, do not ever target when you can master or fluent it. Because that just makes you have stress and pressure on yourself. Just learn it in a fun way. But it does not mean you stop practicing your new language. It's still going that way but we ignore the target. Just enjoy the process. This language you are learning belongs to you. It’s not an art to master, it’s just a tool for you to get the result.
Attend a Language Class
This way, yes you need to attend a language class as one way to learn a new language. It provides you extra time, money and energy. But attending a language class also provides us a better opportunity to master it fast and you will also get a good result because you learnt from the professional. I attended a Dutch Language class when I was living in the Netherlands for my Dutch language. And also I did that for my Germany. We will get to know our progress or learning every week and they will guide us to improve it.
Live with the Native
This last way, it may be possible or impossible for certain people to do it. But I have experienced this way, I got the opportunity to live in the Netherlands for about one year. An instant, I have to know, use, read, hear, and speak in Dutch. It motivates me to learn it faster because I do want to understand everything on my Own. I need to take public transportation, communicate with a lot of people, do groceries while reading product details before purchasing something and many other activities.
These are several ways to learn a new language according to me. It may be differ to certain people. But it really works on me. I am still far away from perfect but keep practicing it everyday. I believe that my hard work will pay me off. Thank you and hope you guys are motivated to learn a new language. Like Lera Baroditsky quote “How language shapes the way we think”. Language is central to our experience of being human, and the languages we speak profoundly shape the way we think, the way we see the world, the way we live our lives.
With love,
Elviera 💛
